Back from Knit-Out 2009

I am exhausted and not very mobile at the moment, but I am happy and excited about this past weekend. We traveled from Kansas City to the cold tundra of Minneapolis where I helped out in the “Learn to Crochet” area of the Knit-Out which spanned the entire lower level of the Mall of America.

Because I was busy assisting in guiding students to teachers and teaching myself, I didn’t get a chance to visit all the booths like I did last year. Purl sat at the table with me. She was a little miffed at not being able to hide herself in the vendors booths like she did last year.

A skein of yarn with a few rows already started and a crochet hook were given to students to learn the single crochet stitch. They were encouraged to take it home and continue practicing.  I reminded each one that if they continued until the skein was completed that they would have completed a scarf: their first project.

I had the opportunity to try to teach a left hander how to crochet. I had heard many times to sit across from the person and allow them to “mirror” my actions. It worked. I tried it 3 times.

Purl meets the Shark

We had a visit from the Shark of the Underwater Adventures Aquarium located in the basement of the mall.

He held Purl, then tried to have her for lunch.

I convinced him to try to crochet instead. He had a little trouble trying to crochet. Fingers are definitely needed for this craft. But that didn’t stop him from trying.

I don’t have an exact number, but I believe we guided over 250 men, women and children through the process of learning how to crochet.  A similar number also learned how to knit.

There were looong lines for some of the booths.  The vendors showed off new yarns and completed projects from patterns available in print or online. My only objection is that those patterns may state they include size for larger persons, but the models are all small. I’d like to see these patterns on women who don’t look like toothpicks.  What is flattering on one size may not be so on another.  I’d be willing to knit the project and model (you can cut off my face if you prefer. I know I am not photogenic)  Any vendors out there willing to let me try it?

Long Lines Long Lines

I am already making plans for next year. Hope to see you there!
