It’s in the wrapping

While browsing a local Walmart clearance aisle last week I found 2 skeins of Bernat Super Stripes bulky yarn. It is blue and black and it jumped into my cart. I wasn’t sure what to do with it but it certainly did not go to waste. This self striping yarn made 4 projects. I used every inch of it, nothing was left over.

SmFingerlessGloveW2 From the Bernat book "6 Fun Designs to Knit & Crochet" (also purchased at Walmart) I found a pattern to crochet half mittens. Using two strands I made a small pair which my grandson put right to work with his toy trucks in the dirt. Then I made a larger pair for my great niece, Lainie. Lainie is almost 9 and needs to be fashionable.  After completing the half mittens for her I went to work using 2 strands again and knitted a scarf on the bias.  This was easy to put together. Cast on 15 stitches on size 10 needles. Row 1: K1 YO  K across to last 3 st   K2TOG  K1   Row 2: Knit across   Repeat row 1 and 2 until desired length.  Upon finishing the scarf there was still enough left to make a headband so she can keep her ears warm.  On the same size 10 needles I cast on 10 and knitted until it was about 14 inches. The last 2 inches was done with only 1 thread instead of two as the first skein ran out before the 2nd. This isn’t a problem, that is the part that will go at her neck.

The fun part, though, was in the packaging.   I cut a pair of hands oScarfHdbdHalfMittensut of cardboard and slipped them into the mittens. Then I enlarged a head shot of Lainie and glued it to a cardboard. I wrapped the scarf around her neck and placed the headband on her head. Pins hold them in place.

I can’t wait for her to see herself in the box when she opens it.
