Hubby’s Sweater

After watching me complete a sweater jacket for myself and the drop stitch shawl for his mother, my husband asked  when I would be making a sweater for him.  We searched several patterns and he found “the one” in a book

Scottish Highland Knits

Scottish Highland Knits

Scottish tweed yarn, with its soft heathery colors reminiscent of the Scottish Highlands, provides the inspiration for this beautiful collection of 18 knits for men, women, children, and the home. Projects include a cable wrap cardigan, a seed stitch jacket, a simple felted child’s cardigan, a delicate and feminine lacy wrapover top, and a shrug. Accessories with Scottish flair include Fair Isle socks, gloves, scarves, and some great knits for the home, such as a Fair Isle throw blanket with Fair Isle stripe, Fair Isle chunky cushions, and a patchwork blanket.

titled “Scottish Highland Knits”.  It’s the Collared Jacket by Wendy Baker. Got the pattern, now for the yarn.  I purchased a couple of skeins of “I Love This Yarn, Stripes” at Hobby Lobby to attempt a short row scarf. I thought the stripes might work nicely with the short rows. Hubby saw me working on this and said this was the yarn he wanted for the sweater. I went in and purchased more yarn.

I did a couple a gauge swatches but did not want the same problems I had with my sweater coat (hmmm, I thought I have blogged that story but it appears I didn,t so I will have to write up that story) so I worked a front on 2 different needle sizes. Once I tried it on him and measured it numerous times I continued the pattern. I finished the 2 fronts, only to find out one side was a different color shading than the other. Ripped it out and searched by supply of yarn. There were 3 different dye lots. Rats. Once I looked at the completed back I found it had the same problem and that the lower half was a different shade. Hubby told me to knit, not rip.

R_sweater3 I finished up the sleeves and pieced it together. The sweater has pockets on each front piece. It is made to naturally curl at the pocket fronts as well as the sleeves and along the bottom edge.

Working the front was a challenge. I finally read aloud the pattern several times and then wrote out row by row. Why?  The pattern reads “Dec 1 st at armhole edge of 2nd row and foll 4 alt rows and at same time dec 1 st at front slope edge of 4th row and foll 4th row and at same time inc 1 st at collar edge of 4th row and foll 6th row.”  Notice the “and at same time” included twice?  And also the row and foll alt rows?  I found writing this out row by row made it much easier to maintain the pattern.

“I Love This Yarn” a Hobby Lobby product, is 100% acrylic.  An exhaustive internet search left me confused about blocking. I decided not to. R_sweater5

I stitched the pieces together. Although I did make buttonholes I did not have buttons yet to attach.

The weather in Kansas City is now getting cold. A light snow is falling. I didn’t finish a moment too soon.

Best of all, he likes it.  Now, I better get started with the Christmas knitting.

Great job on the sweater. I haven’t attempted to make one yet. One of these days….

That looks like nice yarn, also. It’s too bad there are no Hobby Lobby stores in my area.
